Welcome from the Chair

Conference Title: The Impact of Climate Change and Human Interventions on Coastal Zones

We are pleased to welcome you to the 6th International Electronic Conference on Water Sciences (ECWS-6) addressing the impacts of climate change and human interventions on coastal zones. The conference will be held online and promoted and facilitated by the open-access MDPI Journal Water .

In the last few years, five International Electronic Conferences on Water Sciences (ECWS-1, ECWS-2, ECW-3, ECWS-4 and ECWS-5) have addressed a variety of important water-related aspects. A sixth conference focusing on the impact of climate change and human interventions on coastal zones in the Anthropocene is considered timely. The Earth’s most recent geologic time period is a complex mix of climatic changes and human interventions. There exists overwhelming regional as well as global evidence that atmospheric, geologic, hydrologic, biospheric, and other earth-system compartments and processes are now altered by a wide diversity of anthropogenic activities. Different aspects of the interactions between water and the coastal geo-, bio- and ecosphere in the context of global changes will be considered in this conference.

The ECWS-6 invites researchers from academia as well as practioners to contribute original results, novel ideas, scientific concepts and new technologies and experiences to deal with processes within the context of coastal change, making reference to the following topics framed in a changing coastal environment with a special focus on sustainability, resilience, and adaptation:

  • The impact of eustatic and regional sea level rise on coasts, estuaries and deltas in terms of flood risk and hazard assessment
  • The impact of eustatic and regional sea level rise on coasts, estuaries and deltas on coastal ecology
  • The impact of climate change induced changes in wave and storm surge climate on coasts, estuaries and deltas in terms of flood risk and hazard assessment
  • The impact of climate change induced changes in wave and storm surge climate on coasts, estuaries and deltas on coastal ecology
  • Soft and hard interventions to adapt to and mitigate abiotic and biotic coastal change due to climate change and human interventions
  • Assessing the functioning and services of socio-economic and ecological coastal systems

and also a Poster session. Posters can be presented without an accompanying proceedings paper and will be available online on this website during and after the e-conference. However, they will not be added to the proceedings of the conference.

This event will solely be an online proceeding which allows the participation from all over the world with no concerns of travel and related expenditures. An electronic conference provides a platform for rapid and direct exchanges about the latest research findings and novel ideas. The participation as well as the “attendance” of this online conference is free of charge.

Accepted papers will be published in the proceedings of this e-conference, and selected papers will be published in Water with a 20% discount off the APC.

We hope the community will share this enthusiasm and help making this 6th edition a success—for many to come in the future.

Submissions should be made by authors online by registering with www.sciforum.net, and using the "New Submission" function once logged into the system.

  1. Scholars interested in participating in the conference can submit their abstract (about 200–300 words) online on this website until 25 October 2021.
  2. The Conference Committee will notify the acceptance of the abstract by 1 November 2021.
  3. In case of acceptance, authors will be asked to submit their manuscript, along with a presentation and optionally a video presentation of his/her paper (only PDF), until the submission deadline of 8 November 2021.
  4. The manuscripts and presentations will be available on https://sciforum.net/event/ECWS-6 for discussion and rating during the time of the conference from 15-30 November 2021.
  5. The open access journal Water will publish a Special Issue of the conference proceedings papers.
  6. All accepted extended abstracts will be published as one dedicated volume in MDPI Proceedings series journals - Environmental Sciences Proceedings (ISSN: 2673-4931, https://www.mdpi.com/journal/environsciproc).
  7. After the conference, the Conference Committee will recommend manuscripts that may be included for publication in the Special Issue of this conference.
Proceedings Paper

Manuscripts for the proceedings issue must have the following organization:

First page:

  • Title
  • Full author names
  • Affiliations (including full postal address) and authors' e-mail addresses
  • Abstract
  • Keywords
  • Introduction
  • Methods
  • Results and Discussion
  • Conclusions
  • (Acknowledgements)
  • References

Manuscripts should be prepared in MS Word or any other word processor and should be converted to PDF format before submission. The publication format will be PDF. The manuscript should count at least 3 pages (incl. figures, tables and references) and should not exceed 6 pages.

Presentation Slides

Authors are encouraged to prepare a presentation in PowerPoint or similar software, to be displayed online along with the manuscript. Slides, if available, will be displayed directly on the website using the https://sciforum.net/event/ECWS-6 proprietary slide viewer. Slides can be prepared in exactly the same way as for any traditional conference where research results are presented. Slides should be converted to PDF format before submission so that our process can easily and automatically convert them for online display.

Video Presentations

Authors are requested to submit video presentations accompany with extended submissions. Video should be no longer than 3-5 minutes and prepared with one of the following formats: .mp4 / .webm / .ogg (max size: 250Mb). It should be submitted with the full manuscript before 8 November 2021.
